AMS is a part of the Dutch colonial education system in Indonesia. AMS is equivalent to high school (high school) at this point that the senior high school level. AMS uses introductory Dutch language and in the 1930's, AMS schools exist only in some provincial capitals Dutch East Indies, namely Medan (Sumatra), Bandung (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Surabaya (East Java), Makassar (East Indonesia). Additionally AMS in Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Sultanate), Surakarta (Surakarta) and several such residency in Malang city. In addition there are several AMS equivalent of Private Affairs.
Many parents send their children to AMS, because the hope can move on to a higher level such as that in London to THS (Technische Hooge School - founded in 1920 - now - Institut Teknologi Bandung - ITB), Jakarta RHS (Rechts Hooge School - founded in 1924 - now Faculty of Law UI Jakarta), or GHS in Jakarta (Geneeskudige Hooge School - founded in 1927 - now Faculty of Medicine University of Jakarta), Bogor in Landbouw Hooge School - founded in 1940 - now Bogor Agricultural University - IPB. Through AMS means should complete the first MULO spread in almost all the provinces which amounted to only eight, while that through the HBS only in Surabaya, Semarang, Bandung, Jakarta, or Medan.
